As I said in my previous post, Sun will release its latest version of OS, to compete, MSFT will release its NT5 earlier. Microsoft can not afford to delay the release of NT5 for another one year.

MICROSOFT SHIFTS NT 5.0 TIMETABLE TO Q1 '99

A somewhat waggish take on the schedule firming up.

The software giant says the third NT 5.0 beta could be out by Thanksgiving and is making noises to development partners that the final product is on target for a Q1 1999 delivery. For a long time Jesse has predicted NT 5.0 won't arrive until late '99 -- or even into 2000. But he's seeing signs Microsoft is motivated to get the new OS out the door. Just don't expect a product that arrives early next year to be the NT 5.0 Microsoft has been promising. To make that deadline it will have to drop features until it has something it can ship. (from zdnet.com )

Being of the "sucks less" persuasion, in the eternal new features / sucks less debate, I can't say anything bad about that. As the quoted lines of code seems to have grown from 30meg to 45meg in the past year, I'd say the sooner the brakes are put on, the better. Anyway, we'll see how the dates hold.

Cheers, Dan.
