POLAND'S DIGITAL COMPETITION HEATS UP

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Poland is warming up as the most crowded broadcasting market in Eastern Europe.
Wizja TV, run by +Entertainment, was launched six weeks ago ahead of competition from French-led Canal Plus Cyfrowa, which starts on October 30.
Poles watch around 279 minutes of television a day on average, compared with 263 minutes for Americans and 177 minutes for Germans. Harsh winters contribute to the need for indoor entertainment.
Wizja TV has 34,000 digital customers on cable while +Entertainment also owns cable networks through subsidiary Poland Communications, which serves 871,000 subscribers who can receive an analogue service from Wizja. A $7.5 million advertising campaign is backing an increase in digital decoder sales outlets to 500 from 70.
The Canal Plus led service is also backed by broadcasters Polsat and Aster City, TVP (state owned television) and telecoms provider TPSA. Their digital service will ofer 12 channels (Wizja TV offers 18). Both digital services are subsidising early subscribers.

The Polish Prime Minister will open EuroCable Poland. The development of the Polish cable market will be the key focus of the event to be held in Warsaw on November 9th and 10th.
