Zenith's deal with Sky, NDS's parent.......................zenith.com Zenith To Supply Digital Set-Top Boxes For Sky New Zealand DENVER, June 10, 1998 - Expanding its participation in the digital direct broadcast satellite (DBS) market, Zenith Electronics Corporation has been selected to supply digital set-top boxes for SKY Network Television Limited, New Zealand. Under an agreement announced here today at the Cable-Tec Expo, Zenith will design and manufacture digital set-top Integrated Receiver Decoders (IRDs) for SKY Television later this year. Terms were not disclosed. The IRDs for the DBS service are based on the advanced system architecture developed by NDS Ltd. Zenith plans to distribute similar boxes throughout Latin America with News Corp.'s Sky Latin America, and in other world markets. "This agreement broadens Zenith's leadership position in digital technology," said Charles J. Sindelar, division vice president and general manager, Digital Video Group, Zenith Network Systems. "The SKY television agreement, for digital set-top boxes based on the NDS "World Box" platform, represents yet another endorsement of Zenith technology and adds to our growing customer base for digital products." The Zenith/NDS system is an advanced DBS system, which uses industry-standard MPEG-2 (Moving Pictures Experts Group) and DVB (Digital Video Broadcast) architectures in direct-to-home DBS applications. The IRD incorporates MPEG-2 Main Profile Main Level video, QPSK (quadrature phase shift key) demodulation, and digital audio with sampling rates up to 48 kilohertz.
