Washington, Sept. 21 (Bloomberg) -- The White House is unlikely to veto the U.S. Defense Department authorization bill from Congress that calls for transferring responsibility for monitoring commercial satellite exports back to the State Department from the Commerce Department, the Wall Street Journal said, citing unnamed administration officials. The bill would also require presidential certification that the launch of U.S. satellites in China does not strengthen China's ability to design and launch missiles, the Journal said. At the same time, Senator John McCain, a Republican from Arizona, said he would hold hearings to look into ways to promote launches in the U.S., rather than in countries such as China, the paper said.

Hughes Electronics Corp. and other U.S. commercial satellite makers expect satellite export to become more difficult when licensing approval shifts from Commerce to State.
