I had Ameritrade before, but their server is very unreliable and they don't update my position, even my market orders for a long time, so forget about them ... I use Datek for my regular account, they are fine ... Waterhouse for my IRA (I was with them before they have their web service), they are fine too ... Dreyfus for options - I think they have the lowest option commissions and their service is quite good ... I think at this stage where the market moves so fast, you need to maintain at least 2 and preferably 3 accounts, so that if one server is down or busy, you can still transact using other accounts, or every minute you sit waiting, you might be losing quite an amount of money, overall, the above 3 firms are fine with me, no problem with any ...

CatLady <You need an account at a daytrading firm like MBTrading if you want to play with the Internet dudes, IMO.> What do you mean? They have internet shares to short? Besides if you want to open account w/ Ameritrade then try to trade only 4-5 times a year when their system is up and most users go on vacation; otherwise you just give Ameritrade 20% of your takes for their employee profit sharing program or kind of surplus fund to fix their system code. I put an order last week to buy 300 manu, 200 filled so I canceled last Friday. Surprise this morning they bot 100 shares of manu !! and they email me twice they bot twice 100 manu. Can you believe that? I will call tomorrow to complain but I know it is useless. Customers are always wrong. And Baldy will be mad again at my procrastination of getting out.
