I believe it is correct to refer to each of the following as different physical layers. Perhaps lasers and fibers used in WDM (1550 and 1380 nm ?) could be added to this list. The telecom industry has already solved the distance limitation caused by dispersion, but I can believe there are other issues for a low latency network to solve. Can anyone shed any light on this issue?
