Inktomi and Foundry Networks Team to Deliver High Performance Transparent Caching

Business Wire - September 22, 1998 08:10

SAN MATEO and SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 22, 1998--

Companies Combine Innovative Transparent Cache Switching Technology and Carrier-Class Caching to Speed the Internet for End Users

Inktomi Corp. (Nasdaq:INKT), developer of scalable Internet infrastructure software, and Foundry Networks, the award-winning provider of Gigabit Ethernet
switches, routers and server load balancers, today announced that Foundry's ServerIron server load balancer and transparent caching switch has been certified for
interoperation with Inktomi's Traffic Server(tm) network cache. The combined solution allows Internet providers to install transparent caching in their networks, and
is available immediately. The two companies plan to collaborate on sales and co-marketing efforts.

Transparent caching allows network administrators to easily deploy caches anywhere in the network without the need to modify end-user browsers or other
software. The products support caching for standard Web protocols today, with support for additional protocols to be announced in the future.

"Inktomi's carrier-class cache products provide the scalability and cutting-edge features that Internet providers need to compete," said Bobby Johnson, President
and CEO of Foundry Networks. "Combined with Foundry's ServerIron switch, the Inktomi cache products provide web users with significant improvement in
response time and service availability," continued Johnson.

"The Foundry ServerIron product provides excellent price/performance, high reliability and the advanced functionality that our customers demand," said Paul
Gauthier, Chief Technology Officer of Inktomi. "We look forward to working with the Foundry team to deliver the next generation of network performance,"
continued Gauthier.

Inktomi's Traffic Server is a carrier-class network cache designed to help Internet infrastructure providers scale up their operations to meet rapidly growing demand
and performance requirements. Based on Inktomi's innovative cluster and parallel computing technologies, Traffic Server is designed to scale to more than a terabyte
of data and millions of users. By embedding programmable intelligence into the network, Traffic Server provides a platform for ISPs, backbone providers, and
hosting providers to deliver value added services to their customers.

Foundry's ServerIron switch offers ISPs and enterprises a highly resilient, low-cost server load balancing switch that provides up to 3 times the port density of
competing solutions. ServerIron's new transparent cache switching feature improves Internet response time and reduces WAN operating costs by redirecting web
traffic destined to remote Internet hosts to a group of local cache servers. The ServerIron switch is available in 8, 16 or 24 10/100 Mbps ports with an option of one
or two Fast and Gigabit Ethernet expansion ports and is priced as low as $6,295.

Foundry Networks and Inktomi will be demonstrating their transparent caching solutions at the upcoming ISPCON Fall '98 show Sept. 28 - Oct. 1, 1998 at the San
Jose McEnery Convention Center (Foundry Booth No. 949 and Inktomi Booth No. 649).

About S3's Savage3D Accelerator

Savage3D outperforms all shipping 3D accelerators in AGP performance, trilinear mip-mapping, texture compression and DVD/video processing. In addition,
Savage3D is the first 3D accelerator to include S3 Texture Compression (S3TC), which was selected by Microsoft as the standard compression technique in
DirectX. By compressing data up to 1/6 the normally required space, S3TC enables Savage3D to deliver 4X AGP performance and essentially doubles the chip's
frame buffer size by allowing more textures to be stored.

Savage3D design wins have been announced by Hercules, Diamond Multimedia and STB Systems and boards are expected to be available by end of Summer. For
