Re: Box makers = car companies...

JHG, to answer your question briefly, I think this comparison, as with others such as TV's, microwaves, fridges etc (that we often see here)are wrong because the products are fundamentally different. Take a car, TV, microwave etc and it can still do its job in 2, 5, 10 or even 20 years.
Although in theory this is is true with PC's, we all know that the fact is that when it comes to putting new software on, new hardware in, etc, then your PC is redundant in about 2 years. 3 if you are lucky. I have seen PC's in the trash (literally) that 3 years ago were middle range equipment running a business.

These dynamics do not apply at all in these other commodities. There is no continuous incentive for us to upgrade our TV's or cars in the same way( I guess there will be if Bill Gates gets WIndows CE into our cars <g> )
Stuff will happen that makes PC's even cheaper, such as more integration, but I also suspect will speed up the replacement cycle, so that will even out the lower cost/lower revenue argument.

Just my 10c* worth.

BTW, kind of quiet on the Dell bear thread at the moment. LT, only 4 more days before your prophecy is realised....or not...
