r&d costs would be staggering to develop the high tech that cymi has...
thats why they are a monopoly in their field...they had the tech early and are using massive funds for further r&d
the future of semis goes through cymi....

Sammaster:

Don't know about how much it would cost to develop the technology that Cymer has, but the statement that they are using massive funds for further R&D is clearly wrong. I did not go back to verify my figure, but if I remember right they are only spending about $25 million a year on R&D. When I think about high barriers to entry that just does not even come close. If Cymer starts to earn 50% ROE, there will be plenty of new start ups going after their market in my opinion.

Hope someone can convince me otherwise, because I would love to buy more Cymer stock if it actually has a shot of maintaining their monopoly.
