Computer stocks gained after Broadcom Corp., a designer of semiconductors that speed Internet access over ordinary telephone and cable-television lines, said it developed a single chip that can mesh television signals and computer data. Broadcom rose 3 1/8 to 78 1/8. IBM rose 3 1/2 to 128 3/16, and Dell Computer Corp. gained 2 1/16 to 59 15/16. bloomberg.com
