<<...hypnosis can produce the same results. I've heard of ten year olds speaking and writing fluent chinese without having ever been affiliated with chinese people. >>

You believe that and you are asking for someone else to give you proof of something that has been undisputably verified by the highest level scholars in the world generation after generation for 1400 years?

This is at the heart of the Islamic religion. The Quran is considered to have language attributes that are perfect in any way it can be analyzed. It, the Quran, is the miracle that authenticates Mohammads identity as a messenger. If you could find even one piece of convincing evidence to the contrary you would be the only person in fourteen hundred years to prove the Islamic religion to be false. The Quran itself challenges you to gather all of the highest level scholars available in the world to achieve this aim. Once you've gathered them and found that you are unable to produce anything that equals even one sura (chapter) of the Quran, then declare what you believe about the Quran.
Libraries have been established and archived literature exist spanning time over the last fourteen hundred years, which are devoted to this very subject.
Scholars from other religions do not dispute that the quality of language in the Quran is unequaled in the world.

Hey Chris, that is an excellent question and I don't know the answer. I am interested in Raymond's response too.

<<What I want to know is why he never thought it was important to learn to read or write while rubbing shoulders with the scribes for 23 years.>>

I know he thought it was important, but it is still an interesting question.

There is a great deal of evidence that Mohammad (pbuh) himself valued learning to read and write. Prisoners of war were set free if they would agree to teach Muslims to Read. In reference to education, one of the sayings of Mohammad (pbuh) went something like "Go as far as China if need be to seek knowledge." At that time such a trip would be almost equal to going to Mars today. That is, it was not impossible, but it would require a gathering of all recourses and the willingness to accept all risks to begin such a journey.

. What I want to know is why he never thought it was important to learn to read or write while rubbing shoulders with the scribes for 23 years.

That was the whole reason God selected him to be the messenger. This way, no one could say that he had written the Qur'an himself or that he had read the Bible or done research. It was impossible. So now people are faced with a problem of determining how he could have produced the Qur'an if he could not read. Moreover, how could have anyone known the Future without God's guidance??

Peace be unto you,
