Compaq Computer's Asia Sales to Be Lower Than It Expected Bloomberg News September 22, 1998, 2:56 a.m. PT Compaq Computer's Asia Sales to Be Lower Than It Expected Singapore, Sept. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Compaq Computer Corp., the world's biggest maker of personal computers, said its sales from Asia this year will be lower than it had earlier expected because of the region's currency and debt crisis. Paul Chan, vice president and managing director of Compaq Computer Asia/Pacific Pte., said his company's regional sales will be ''off'' from its target and the number of units sold will be little changed from a year ago. He declined to disclose Compaq's sales target or its sales from last year. ''No company can avoid the storms that are going on all around us, so we did in fact take a reduction in some of our targets,'' Chan said. ''That's the only realistic thing to do.'' This comes two months after Chan said Compaq would revise sales targets for the region amid the economic crisis and a global slowdown in personal computer sales. Asia accounts for about 5 percent of the company's revenue. Compaq, however, is still investing in Asia. Chan said the company would spend $15 million over five years to build a sales network to sell computers over the Internet in the region.
