<OT> Java stuff

Greg, sometimes that cool stuff is Java Script, which in utterly unrelated to Java (except by name.) Or so a programmer friend of mine just told me the other day.

Greg,

Man, you must be seeing a different Java than me. The catch phrase for Java is "write once, port everywhere." We get management edicts that new tools must be written in Java. We then ask: "OK, when a customer calls saying his Packard Bell PC running Navigator 3.1.0.1.4.6 won't run our tool are we going to fix it? If the answer is no, then why'd we use Java in the first place? I could go on, but as you can tell I'm sick of Java (and this is OT anyway.)

Mabe Java will work as advertised one day (if MS stops sabotaging it.) So far I'm unconvinced. Just buy a REALLY BIG server (HP V-Class comes to mind :) and use Perl, it works. ;-)

PS: I have seen some very nice Java work, it's not all crud.

Most of the back-end servers are running C++ based engines. I have nothing against Java as a tool for improving web site users interfaces, controls, etc. What I find painful is that java is advertised as a solution to problems its not suitable for. The code model developed by sun is more suitable to toasters and microcontrollers. If Java is used as a language (without and of the Java Virtual machine crap, which makes optimization very difficult... too low level), it might have a future, but without the portability.
