Energy Biosystems Announces Two Patents Issue and Talks
Progress With Chemical Companies

PR Newswire - October 06, 1998 09:21

THE WOODLANDS, Texas, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Energy BioSystems (Nasdaq: ENBC) has been issued two new patents which strengthen the company's exclusive position on its BDS technology and expands its patent estate. The first patent "Rhodococcus Flavin Reductase Complementing DszA and DszC Activity", issued on September 8, 1998 as U.S. Patent No. 5,804,433. This invention provides a novel enzyme that activates an integral portion of the biodesulfurization pathway and increases the desulfurization rate.

The second patent "DszD Utilization in Desulfurization of DBT by Rhodococcus sp. IGTS8", issued on September 22, 1998 as U.S Patent No. 5,811,285. This invention further describes the enhancement of desulfurization with the addition of complementary enzymes to the biocatalyst system.

With these patents, Energy BioSystems currently has rights to 26 U.S. patents, 29 foreign patents, with 15 patent applications pending in the U.S. Patent Office and 80 foreign patent applications pending worldwide to cover its biocatalytic process technologies and biocatalyst genes.

Energy BioSystems continues to progress in its development of biocatalytic desulfurization. In addition, we are encouraged by the strong interest from the major chemical companies that we have introduced to our novel and unusual chemical products from our biocatalytic reaction processes. The leading area of interest is in their potential to deliver unusual surfactant properties not normally observed with existing commercial surfactants.

Energy BioSystems Corporation is a United States based leading edge biotechnology company developing biocatalytic processes for commercial petroleum refining and industrial production. The company has developed special knowledge in working with Rhodococcus and related bacterial genera and applied this knowledge to biocatalysis. Expertise in oxygenase biochemistry, particularly related to complex cellular pathways; and expertise in multi- phase systems add to our capabilities. The company's principle focus has been on developing biocatalytic desulfurization, a proprietary process using enzymes to remove sulfur from petroleum, including fuels, while operating at mild temperature and pressure. This process is expected to help refiners and vehicle manufacturers worldwide meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations in a more cost effective manner.
