VERITAS Software and Partners Demonstrate World's Largest Storage Area Network

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 23, 1998-- VERITAS, with Leading Server, Storage, Fibre Channel & Application Providers, Demonstrates Windows NT and

UNIX-based SAN; Makes SAN Management Solutions Available for

Customers Today

VERITAS(R) Software Corporation (Nasdaq:VRTS), the leading provider of end-to-end storage management solutions, in conjunction with numerous industry partners, today demonstrates the world's largest Storage Area Network (SAN) in an industry event at the Millennium Hotel in New York City.

SANs help ensure fast, continuous access to business-critical data across distributed Windows NT and UNIX networks, while significantly reducing management and availability costs. In the SAN demonstration, VERITAS exhibits three aspects of storage management that are enhanced in SAN environments: centralized management, backup and recovery, and high availability.

The SAN demonstration consists of a heterogeneous environment made up of HP-UX, Solaris and Windows NT-based servers, storage arrays, tape libraries and fiber switches and hubs from 14 leading storage and network hardware vendors.

VERITAS partners who have contributed components for the demonstration include: Brocade Communications Systems, Inc., the Clariion Advanced Storage Division of Data General, Dell Computer Corporation, EMC Corporation, Hitachi Data Systems, Hewlett-Packard Company, LSI Logic Corporation, McDATA Corporation, Microsoft Corporation, Oracle Corporation, Storage Technology Corporation, Sun Microsystems, Inc. and Vixel Corporation.

"Last month, VERITAS announced its vision for storage-centric computing, the next paradigm shift in mission-critical enterprise computing, built on SAN architectures," said David Spenhoff, vice president of marketing for VERITAS Software.

"Today, for the first time at the VERITAS SAN event, we are demonstrating three killer applications on the world's largest SAN configuration. VERITAS and its partners are proving that they have real solutions that will help users deploy and realize the benefits of SANs today."

VERITAS Demonstrates Centralized Management, High Speed Backups and High Availability in SAN Environments

To demonstrate centralized management, VERITAS implements VERITAS Storage Manager in the SAN environment to provide centralized monitoring and management of all storage resources on a SAN including the SAN fabric and SAN attached storage devices, file systems, disks and Fibre Channel switches and hubs.

Network Attached Storage (NAS) is another critical piece of a SAN environment that is managed by VERITAS Storage Manager(TM) as part of the SAN demonstration. The NAS device in this demo is a LSI Logic MetaStor brand Intelligent Storage Hub embedded with VERITAS online storage management technology.

The integration of VERITAS technology into the MetaStor Intelligent Storage Hub helps ensure that users will receive maximum availability, performance, and simplified management of networked storage in a SAN environment. NAS devices such as the MetaStor products will act as intelligent, plug-n-play storage "servers," enabling easy scalability and ubiquitous data access in SAN environments.

NetBackup Enables Unprecedented LAN-Free Backups in SAN Environments

In the SAN demonstration, VERITAS uses VERITAS NetBackup(TM) to show LAN-free backup and tape drive sharing. These capabilities remove the load from the LAN during backups, allowing backups to occur at any time of the day without slowing down system performance and affecting users.

During LAN-free backups, data transfers occur from the disk array or server directly through the SAN, running at channel speeds, rather than stealing bandwidth from the slower, more heavily utilized LAN network.

Using the same components, VERITAS demonstrates tape drive sharing on the SAN in which multiple hosts are able to perform backups using the same tape drive, enabling much more cost-effective utilization of drive resources.

Drive sharing helps deliver continuous application availability by allowing reconfiguration of tape drives without forcing the server to be powered off during administration, which is required in traditional backup environments.

VERITAS Cluster Server Provides Groundbreaking High Availability in SAN Environments

VERITAS Cluster Server(TM) is designed specifically to take advantage of the HA characteristics inherent in Fibre Channel-based SAN environments to provide users with continuous access to business data. The product provides advanced, scalable, cost-effective high availability management capabilities in clustered environments, including SANs.

The demonstration highlights VERITAS Cluster Server managing availability for a SAP environment, running on a back-end Oracle database, across 32 clustered servers. VERITAS Cluster Server's "cascading" failover capability removes the inherent restriction of today's one-to-one high availability solutions by allowing applications to fail over to consecutive servers as necessary.

As proven by today's demonstration, VERITAS and its partners have solutions that will enable customers to realize the benefits of SAN today.

VERITAS is in a strong position to drive SAN because it provides users with the unique combination of platform-independent online and offline storage management and high availability products, partnerships with the industry's leading system, storage and interconnect companies, and proven technology leadership.

The VERITAS SAN vision and technology will drive the future of storage-centric computing, which will continue to deliver the performance, availability and manageability enterprise customers require to remain competitive in an information-centric world.
