I read in the spec. that the K6/K6-2 is packaged in BGA and runs at 1.8V compared to 2.2V on desktop version. At 1.8V it is well within the thermal envelop of notebook. I also want to let you know that the cost difference associated to BGA (ball grid array) and PGA (pin grid array) is minimal.

Demand is inversely proportional to price. The demand for the K6-300 mobile will be hot since it is almost $400 cheaper than the PII. You can get 3 mobile K6-300 for the price of 1 PII-300.
