It does appear that the internet search feature is improved over MS Win95/98 version.

NT has had the "information server" add-on available for a while. It indexes all the files in your computer and can extend searches beyond your local disk to other IIS on the network.

The implementation is neat. The file system in NT is a full-fledged database system, which in particular means you can have trigger call-backs for operations on the it. So IIS registers and "index_update" call-back function as a trigger for any create/modify operations on the file system database.

Sherlock looks somewhat innovative considering its in a $100 OS

Rich as you, Hugh and Alomex mentioned there should be broader retreival to it , ideally data based over server networks and maybe Server OS X and Mac OS X will have it .

AAPL's OS 8.5 boasts a PowerPC "native" apple-script and hopefully it will make some expansion of Sherlock's capabilities possible .

A evolving Sherlock should also have some application value . A word processing system which could trigger background web data reference searches during foreground document preparation would be exciting .

Seems like both AAPL and IBM are not accepting Window's status quo.
