3Com Adds To SuperStack, OfficeConnect Lines
InternetWeek - 09/21/98; 12:00 a.m. ET

3Com is unveiling a series of hubs, switches, and modems designed to support the intranet and
client/server demands emerging in midtier and small enterprises.

The Santa Clara-based company Monday will add three products to its SuperStack line and two to
its OfficeConnect family.

For the SuperStack line, 3Com (company profile) is adding fiber support with the SuperStack II
Switch 3300 FX 10/100 stackable switch. It also will provide a gigabit Ethernet module that slides
into the 3300 FX and into the 1100 and 3300 copper versions.

The intention is to provide a path to faster networks for enterprises deploying fiber.

"The opportunity is to connect from the workgroup with gigabit down to our CoreBuilder device,"
said Karen Oddey, vice president of small- and medium-enterprise marketing for 3Com. "The 3300
FX is useful in the large enterprise, but also provides an advantage to medium-size businesses
building faster networks."

3Com also is adding two new workgroup switches, the SuperStack II Switch 610 and 630. The
610 supports 10 megabits per second, while the 630 is a 10/100 switch. Neither switch is stackable
nor supports the real-time traffic flow features of the 1100 and 3300. The switches also do not
support the 802.1p and 802.1q standards.

"3Com is strong in the small- to medium-size market and this adds to that strength," said Michael
Speyer, an analyst with the Yankee Group.

To round out the SuperStack offerings, 3Com is adding the SuperStack II Dual Speed Hub-Hub 10
stacking kit. The kit lets IT managers migrate LANs from 10 Mbps to 100 Mbps. The module
slides into 3Com's 10-Mbps hubs and lets them connect to new 10/100 hubs and share
management functions.

"This allows IT managers to upgrade 10-Mbps networks to handle more demanding applications.
They can connect 10 Mbps to higher speeds and do it as if it was a single network. They don't have
to throw out their 10-Mbps hubs," said Oddey.

For small businesses, 3Com is introducing OfficeConnect Dual Speed Hub 16, a 10/100 hub with
a fixed 16-port configuration. For connection to the Internet, 3Com is introducing the
OfficeConnect LAN Modem, an integrated four-port hub and IP router that supports 56K/V.90
analog connections.

The LAN modem is priced at $349 and is expected to be available Oct. 1. The OfficeConnect Dual
Speed Hub 16 is priced at $695 and is available this week.

The SuperStack II Switch 3300 FX is priced at $6,995, or $875 per port, and will be available in
November. The 610 and 630 switches are priced at $1,295 ($57 per port) and $2,995 ($125 per
port), respectively. The switches are expected to ship next month. The Hub stacking kit is priced at
$199 and is available this week.
