IS-95 is the over the air transmission standard for packet data from the phone to the basestation. It is digital transmission standard.

IS-99 is an overlay over the top which takes those same digital over the air packets and reformats them into a modem standard which the rest of the world understands, namely the hayes AT modem type standard. So the IS-99 is just an enhancement of the IS-95 set. Same goes for IS-657. It is an enhancement by taking those same packets that come over the air to your phone and adding the internet protocol to it (TCP/IP) and making it compatible with the existing networks out there. Your phone today with a software upgrade can do these standards.

As for the separate track later, this is what they are showing at PCS98. It is a new over the air waveform that makes much faster data possible and is totally compatible with the existing CDMA waverform. this will be differnt from the phone you have today.

Hope this helps.
