Viagra On Sale On Railway Stations
Tuesday September 22, 9:38 PM

(AP news) The controversial anti-impotence drug Viagra is being sold to commuters at rail stations in London for œ15 a tablet.

Three walk-in GP centres at Victoria, Euston and Waterloo stations are selling the drug at their own pharmacies, after a consultation and blood test costing œ120.

Medicentre, the company which owns the centres, is even offering a deal in which patients buying 78 tablets - three a week for six months - gets back the œ120 consultation fee.

The Government has placed a temporary NHS ban on prescribing the controversial drug.

A spokeswoman for the company said: "Obviously we are a business, but we're offering the tablet in a safe way.

"There's a demand, and we give our patients rigorous checks to see that Viagra is the most appropriate treatment. We've heard that people are paying up to œ40 a tablet on the black market. So we do not think we are profiteering for its own sake."

The blood test, she said, checked hormonal levels, and if a man had low testosterone levels he would not be prescribed the drug because Viagra would not be suitable.

Other treatments were also being offered, she added.

The Government has warned NHS doctors not to prescribe the drug except in "exceptional" circumstances but GPs can write private prescriptions.

The Department of Health is expected to issue clear and permanent guidance at the end of October.
