The PC industry won the battle against NCs (Network Computers), but
lost the war. Why? Sub $1,000 PCs have slowed revenue growth to
single digits -- with worse news to follow: interactive portable phones
will gut the industry. Here's why:

1) Cheap Digital Wireless Bandwidth. The advent of CDMA
technology will radically expand the amount of wireless bandwidth
available. This development will increasingly open the door to new
services and reduce prices.

2) The Internet. The ubiquitous Internet -- much more than the
PC-centric Web -- provides a way to build, deploy, and manage
services provided to consumer devices.

3) Well-engineered small device operating systems. Qualcomm
recently chose the Palm operating system as their choice for a
new line of phones. The Palm Pilot (NASDAQ:COMS) represents a
break-through in small device engineering. The sleek feature
functionality of the Palm Pilot has generated a cottage industry
of over 1,000 applications.

Gomez believes that intelligent portable phones, like Qualcomm's
(NASDAQ:QCOM) pdQ phone, will create a boom in Internet-based
wireless services that perform real world tasks such as brokerage,
banking, travel reservations, etc.
