WASHINGTON, Sept 22 (Reuters) - The U.S. government posted a budget deficit of $11.17 billion in August, down sharply from a deficit of $35.19 billion in the same month of last year, the Treasury Department said on Tuesday.

Through the first 11 months of fiscal 1998, which ends on Sept. 30, the government has posted a surplus of $31.82 billion -- a sharp
turnaround from the comparable period of fiscal 1997 when it was running a deficit of $71.90 billion. >>
