The unfortunate fact of it is that nobody wins. Clinton may not be above the law, but he was asked about a consensual sexual act, and he (typically) chose to conceal the facts. But Starr was not pursuing a matter of national interest, as in Watergate, or with Iran/contras; he was pursuing Clinton. The Presidency is diminished (temporarily, for the Presidency is an office, not a man) and the Independent Prosecutor is diminished (temporarily, also). But in the meantime, a nation of primacy and importance is diverted from its proper role as a leader in the community of nations. I think most wish this matter would just go away, but I fear that these two factions are destined to lay waste to each other, and in the process, to leave the world without US leadership in difficult economic times.
