Ray I'm the same age as you. I have always grown a small vegetable garden. My favourite expression around the office is "it's too late to plant potatoes this year". But next year I've been wanting to dig up the front lawn so this will be my chance. Don't have a gun, I'll have to fight off any usurpers with a crowbar.

My Mothers boyfriend told me about the depression he lived on a farm in Michigan . It was awful from what I gather they lived due to the farm which allowed them to trade food for things they did not have. He speaks of using newpapers to keep his feet warm in the winter. To this day he is ever so more appreciative of small things given to him.

I think we are about the same age I was born close the end of the war.

Our economy from where I sit is holding houses in my area are not dropping in value but appear to be going up. Seventy percent of Californians living in LA felt CA was doing fine. After yesterday however i question the statistics.

Deflation? What deflation? The intrinsic deflation of the last era? That era ended 9/1/98. No matter where I look, I can't find lower prices. Wages are rising in excess of 4% while productivity is flat. Diane Is quite correct about California real estate. The low end is rising at a stable 6%. The FED is pumping without precedent. Daily outright purchases. I guess they're concerned about deflation even though the money supplies are exploding. Who's deflation? Japan's?

This can't be good news, but no one cares:

NEW YORK, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Publisher Dow Jones & Co. said Tuesday its 1999 national advertising rates for The Wall Street Journal will rise 4.2 percent.

No one cares because the mind set from good times is that it is easy to pass along the increased costs. We can afford it. Thank you, FED.
