This is better than a sharp stick in the eye: Compal Raises 1998 Net Profit Forecast 43% to NT$5.42 Bln Taipei, Sept. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Compal Electronics Inc. of Taiwan raised its forecast for 1998 net profit almost 43 percent. Compal raised the forecast to NT$5.42 billion ($157 million), or NT$6.48 a share -- meeting analyst expectations -- from NT$3.8 billion, or NT$4.56 a share, the Taiwanese notebook PCs maker said. ''The higher target is credited to cost cutting and foreign exchange gains of NT$460 million,'' it said. With exports slowing along with the rest of Asia, Taiwan let its currency weaken 5.2 percent in the six months to June to help spur exports. Meanwhile, Compal cut its 1998 sales forecast to NT$40 billion from NT$45 billion because of stiff competition from low- priced PCs, or models sold below $1,000, the company said. On the Taiwan Stock Exchange, Compal climbed NT$3 to NT$105. Some 15 million shares were traded, making the stock the fourth active by value. 05:20:23 09/22/1998 Any redistribution of Bloomberg content, including by framing or similar means, is expressly prohibited without the prior written consent of Bloomberg L.P.
