Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp. said Monday it entered into an agreement with the Pacific Exchange to modify the nation's third most active stock exchange's equities trading system for decimal-based pricing.

A company spokeswoman declined to put a value on the deal.

The software company and applications outsourcer said in a statement that the project to convert the system, expected to be completed in January 1999, will be implemented in May 1999.

Cognizant Technology said it would provide assistance and backup for testing the interfaces between PCX and the brokers and traders who will be working with the new system.

The company has worked with the exchange in the past, most recently finishing its Year 2000 conversion. The Pacific Exchange operates the nation's most automated equities trading floor in San Francisco and Los Angeles. It is also the third largest stock options market.
