The "Firm quote rule" that a market maker stands ready to execute at its posted bid and ask, varies in its applications and theory. Id love to start a discussion of the merits of trading listed stocks. Many hate that discussion as they only have good access to soes, sent and ecns. But we know what a disaster that is. I have about 8 points that support trading listed, but i will wait till we get rid of the stock hypers and nonsense. Also, those OTC lovers, I like trading otc as well, I'm just presenting it as food for thought.
