"If that is the case then what are you doing here?
Most investors I know are investing for the "future".
If it never comes, why bother?"

I invest in the companies that are great in the past and right now! Not the company may be good and may be bad in the future.

When I said "the future will never come", I mean you can always tell yourself that "tomorrow will be better, we will always have tomorrow." You could say this for years while none of those "tomorrow" is actually better.

Good luck on your future chasing.

> Open Systems or Proprietary?

If I buy systems, I want it open. If I invest, I want it to be a proprietary gorilla. Big difference.

Name a high tech gorilla that is not built on proprietary standard. Microsoft has Win32 API. Intel has x86. Cisco has their switching protocol. Lucent has install base of telephony equipment in the Baby Bells.

COMS could make Ethernet proprietary and maybe it is a gorilla now. Now it is just another monkey in the forest.

SUNW is doing it right. It makes Java sound like an open standard to gain support but in reality it is not open. Sun can take Java to v2.0 or Java2001 any time it wants to. We will see how the cards get played.

I believe MSFT will eventually see the light and become a good corporate citizen by joining the open standards world.

Read this and you'll find out why the only way MS will be open if the DOJ breaks them up. Otherwise there is no reason for MS to give up the monopoly. Where did MS say you have to go today? buy a new upgrade

Microsoft's fall?
cgi.chicago.tribune.com
As the computer industry looks toward the fall with new products waiting to be unveiled, one issue is on every executive's mind: The Microsoft case. If the Department of Justice prevails, the world
of computing will change immeasurably
---

The only other chance to put MS in its place which should be at the bottom of the pile with its not ready for prime time software is what Oracle's Larry Ellison said - the internet will take them out. Time will tell but it would be nice for the DOJ to break them up to speed up the process and get a good OS for the masses with quality applications.

Lets say the DOJ broke up MS OS from its applications. You probably would see a major computer supplier bundal Linux as a option for the masses. The MS application group would probably have Linux, Unix, etc offerings. Java would be full speed ahead. Boy that sure looks like the consumers will finally get a choice. At the end of the day the best system would rule and the average Joe would finally get some choices and a quality product. That was a nice dream but back to reality MICROSLOP RULES :-).
