Ann - politics is what keeps all laws on the books, and why they were enacted is never irrelevant. If you actually got that debate you want to see, I am in hopes you can avoid attempting to use some of the arguments you're raised to support your case.

Because you didn't get in the California real estate market as cheaply as others is meaningless. I wasn't old enough to vote in most of this country's elections; I wasn't born early enough to get to fly Corsairs off of carriers in WWII, either. OK. It wasn't fair. Life is not always fair.

re: "Simply take a geographic area, such as San Jose, and add up all the property taxes paid by the 45+ homeowners vs. the property taxes paid by the under 35s. Its about a 1-10 ratio."

You're not seeing that flashing, bright red "SO WHAT" light being pointed at you.

The age of the taxpayer is really only statistically interesting - to you. This smacks of the kind of class envy that some on-the-edge liberals usually like to engage in.

Also, I don't own any property in California.

Mr. K.

Michelle,

I wish Illinois had the same property tax law as California. When I bought this house the taxes were $900. Ten years later $3,500. When I'm 60 at this rate they will be over ten grand and if I live to be 70 they will be about $40,000 per year to live in my own house. Far more than I can pay.

I have some income producing land and I don't care so much about that tax but the property tax is forcing people to leave their homes. You live in your home, it's not an income producer.
