A few pieces of an article from Print and Graphics. R&E council highlights "critical" trends By Dennis E. Mason Every year , top management from printing firms and their major suppliers come together at the Critical Trends Conference of the Research and Engineering Council of the Graphic Arts Industry(R&E council). This meeting is structured to explore the technologies and processes that are likely to alter the way printing is done in the future, as well as the shifts in media that could impact the industry. The 1998 conference, held in Asheville, N.C. May13-16, adressed a number of issues of importance to printers everywhere. (PHOTO insert) Speakers at the R&E council 's 1998 Critical conference included, Roger Hancuff, president, NEC; Laura Gale, senior vp, World Color; Joe Davis, CEO, Consolidated Graphics; Bob Verrando, president, Presstek; and Mary Lee Schneider, senior vp, R.R. Donnelley. Robert W. Hallman, senior vp of Kodak Polychrome Graphics (KPG), reinforced Van Meeuwen's comments in his description of KPG - the combination of Eastman Kodak, Polychrome, Horsell Anitec, equally owned by Kodak and Sun Chemical. "Today", he said, "the new company is integrating the best of all the organizations which comprise the new company.". He went on to state that, while the emphasis of suppliers currently is upon prepress consumables, tommorow it will be in the pressroom. he told the crowd that he expects no-process plate technology to become particularly important in the future. Thermal and ink jet are the most desirable no-process technologies, according to Mr. Hallman, who added that thermal appears to hold the greater promise today. ???????? How interesting that the new CEO of Presstek was, back in May, talking about the very product and processes that he is now walking the halls of IPEX with in his hands. The ex-prseident of Sun Chemical and ex-vp of KPG is not a stranger to this industry or the people in it. Good luck to each and all SG
