If you look at the benefit increases in the 70's, the Congress was raising Social Security benefits by 20% one year and other years 10% and 5%. The Social Security tax in 1970 was 6 or 8% (including employer contribution) on the first 3,000 of income. Now, the Social Security tax is 12-13% on about 150% of the median income. It's basically a drain from people who work in high cost areas, i.e., coastal and big cities, to people who work in the low cost and lower salary areas.
