Paul - RE Mercedes - I'm glad you mentioned Mercedes!! Mercedes was forced to become much more price competitive over the past few years, why do you think they are building ML320's in Alabama?? Just like Intel, Mercedes and BMW were sitting pretty, keeping those prices sky high. Then, remember when Lexus came along? I remember when the LS400 was introduced at 35k. All of a sudden, Mercedes and BMW sales went into the toilet. They recovered, 'when' they became more content and price competitive!! Besides, haven't you heard - Mercedes is merging with Chrysler <ggg>. My point is that if AMD keeps on doing this, the consumer will win, and Intel will go *nowhere* until it's higher margined chips kick in. I hope they sell in *big* volumes, because I *do* want to see my Intel move (other than from making some bucks trading it when it yo-yos 10-15 points)....

John

PS - I keep hearing that AMD is a 'cheap' chip, goes in 'cheap' machines, etc. etc. As long as the chip *works* and is compatible with x86 software, isn't cheap an *advantage*? (Yeah, I know that AMD uses a slower bus design, MMX2 is on the way, etc., but for the average home web surfer, who cares??) What am I missing here??? I posed a question to the thread some time ago asking anyone if they had statistics that AMD chips failed much more often than Intel chips, got no response...

<<You want a fast Compaq Pentium II - you buy it at a higher price.

Mercedes cost more than Chevy's - and you don't see Mercedes dropping
their price>>

And in a slowing economy, Mercedes sales drop more than Chevy sales.
