I am a newcomer to following AMAT since Feb. I have read about denial, capitulation and consolidation within the industry. Jtech and others have mentioned that AMAT in '96 used their strength to acquire in the down times. I also remember talk of who AMAT might acquire this cyclical downturn. One company in this discussion has been Teradyne, the leading ATE manufacturer. In the last 2-3 weeks 5% of TER's stock has traded in blocks with another ~2 mil. of large trades crossing the table. Could we be seeing consolidation? TER is held by 87% institutions, so unless one is trading with another, somebody else is interested or bailing of course. AMAT is the only gorilla in the industry that can afford TER. Could be interesting.
