Cisco declines comment on Ciena rumor

NEW YORK, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:CSCO - news) declined to comment Tuesday on
market rumors it may consider an acquisition of telecommunications equipment maker Ciena Corp. (Nasdaq:CIEN -
news)

Cisco said it does not comment on market rumors or speculation as a matter of corporate policy.

Shares of Ciena rose 3-7/8 or 34 percent to 14-7/8 in heavy trading amid rumors it may be a takeover target following its failed merger with Tellabs
Inc. (Nasdaq:TLAB - news), analysts and traders said.

Ciena spokesman Denny Bilter said he had not heard of any takeover rumors. Bilter said he could not explain the company's stock activity but pointed
to the company's announcement it would supply equipment to Japan Telecom Co. Ltd. .
