Tony,

What I meant was,,, yes the formats you use at the professional are highly professional and specialized and expensive. However, what gets incorporated at the high end sometimes finds its way into the consumer market some years down the road. In Ampex's case, for example, some of the technology for their high end recorders is incorporated in camcorders and they collect royalties.

What I was driving at; Ampex has high hopes for someday licensing their technology they use to make the best images in your world. You mentioned a discernible difference in the image quality between the new DV camcorders and Betacam. I realize there is a big difference in price. But when this is available to the consumer mass market, price will not be a factor; if the quality of one format is vastly superior to another, then our expectation that the consumer desire for the best image quality should benefit Ampex is reasonable.
So I was interested in your bird's eye view of the differences in image quality you have experienced with different formats.
