"In spite of the economic recession affecting markets in the rest of the region, printer demand remains strong in both India and China. China's printer shipments grew a phenomenal 77 percent in the second quarter of 1998, and India enjoyed a 33 percent increase over the same quarter of 1997. As the largest printer market in the region, China alone accounted for nearly 33 percent of the second quarter 1998 printer volume in Asia/Pacific (outside of Japan).

"China's exploding ink jet market grew 150 percent from the second quarter of 1997, commanding 41 percent of all printers shipped in China in the second quarter of 1998," said Lane Leskela, senior industry analyst for Dataquest's Asia/Pacific PC and Printer Distribution Channels program.

The five largest markets in Asia/Pacific were responsible for 78 percent of the region's printer shipments in the second quarter of 1998. After China's leading 33 percent share, Australia accounted for 17 percent of the quarter's shipment volume, followed by South Korea with 12 percent, Taiwan with 10 percent, and India with more than 6 percent market share. South Korea suffered a 50 percent year-on-year decline in printer shipments, and quarterly printer volume in Australia dipped for the very first time, with second quarter 1998 shipments down 6 percent over the same period in 1997.
