That was enjoyable reading. Was trading coon skins considered making a living, or was it simply an adjunct to a (farming?) life? How was trade conducted? Did you haul im on down to a general store, or what? Were the skins not damaged by the dogs when the coons were killed? BTW, Us Northern folk think raccoons are cute and cuddly; we wouldn't dream of hurtin the little critters; I do hear, however, that they are credited with a great deal of intelligence. Your reminiscence seems to leave the question open on either side...

I see that a farm upbringing and a Southern upbringing...are not entirely equivalent!

I realize that I am inviting some serious flame from the 'geographically challenged' BUT...as one from 'Gawds Country', Texans really hate being mentioned in the same sentence as 'Okies'. It's un-natural...if you catch my meaning.
