Bribery, Treason, or other High Crimes and Misdemeanors.

Like betrayal of the public trust. That, and willful attempts to thwart and subvert the Justice Department. That's what caused impeachment proceedings to be brought against Nixon.

And so also will it be the case with Clinton. The die is cast, and the way is clear. Congressmen and Congresswomen, don't be intimidated by this White House, even though this WH has done it's best to intimidate and subvert this nation's system of justice. Do your duty.

If BC had felt the need to be truthful in the PJ deposition, he would have been truthful, and not deceitful. It's that simple. He felt the political need to deceive, and so he did.

John, impeachment is so untested in case law (and I think the framers knew it would be rare) that it is left up to the lower house which more closely numerically represents the people, to make a determination of what is impeachable. Then, and only then if a majority of those representatives feel the crimes to be serious enough, they don't get to pass judgement without a trial before the Senate.

I believe the release of the tape was designed to let Americans get over their shock before they had to sit through hours of lurid and embarrassing televised hearings. Now that the pruriently curious have gotten their fill, the furor over the sex aspects will die down some, and the representatives will have heard from their constituents.

Few will have the stomach for re-hashing the content, and they'll back away from impeachment.

That is the bargaining chip I think they're playing now - what the White House has to offer in return is surely one of those things keeping Clinton up at night. Do they fess up on travelgate? Do they turn over the person responsible for the FBI files? Who are they going to offer up as the token fall-guy?

It's not over 'til the fat lady sings.

By the way, the "other side is/was out to embarrass me" defense for responding to questioning with lies is ludicrous on its face. If you don't think so, try doing it under oath in a deposition and see how many interesting new people you meet.

Mr. K.
