Bill,
MO Looking for longs? Looking for a safe haven? Looking for a four percent dividend? Phillip Morris is a huge conglomerate food and beverage company that has been beaten down because of the tobacco exposure. Kraft Foods, Miller Brewing and a host of other premiere brand names are part of big MO. The number one recognizable brand name in the world is? That's right, MARLBORO. Altoid, the uncommonly strong mint was selected by Monica as the breath freshener of choice. The tobacco fiasco is grinding down with most state suits being thrown out on appeal to federal court. The fed's say no class exists in the medical suits because everyone is not harmed in the exact same way. Tobacco related illnesses are enough different to eliminate the class. The states would have to bring 10,000 separate suits if their former class action held 10,000 people. The settlement that MO and other tobacco companies are trying to reach with the states would be paid for by increased prices. Big MO is worth about $65 per share without the tobacco division, not at the bargain price of $48. MO is sitting on billions in cash waiting for settlement day to resume their stock repurchase program. The dividend is increased yearly.
FLASH, FLASH, FLASH, BIG MO TOPS COCA COLA AS THE BEST INVESTMENT FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS. MO has returned more value to shareholders than any other stock. If you had purchased MO five years ago and held you dividend payments would equal about 12% on your investment today.
Take some of that hard earned money from your shorts and put it in the market leader. The undervalued share price won't stay here for long. Congress can't do any more damage to tobacco, Clinton is too busy with other more pressing issues to get involved in his plan to strip the shareholders of wealth. The states are finding out that the best lawyers in the world work for Big MO.
