General responses happen, you know. :-) Obviously, one hopes nothing untoward has happened to I.L. Given the events of the day (options expiration, currency situation, 3%+ decline), the timing of his absence is not propitious. P.

Hey, that's great, Iqbal... now, how many points did the market fall before that prescient call? Acampora, Cramer, Sew, and other non-permabears had this market nailed before the open today... well before 1:30, to be sure. Your nimbleness is to be congratulated, even if few can act on it. As for your perception of the medium-term trend... well, no one is perfect! :-) BTW, do you think any of your admirers are still holding COMS per your recommendation last week? Remember, even the conquering Roman emperors acquiesced to having a soothsayer in their chariot, whispering, "All glory is fleeting." P.

Re: Obsession with Obsessions Clinton needs a strong censure for lying under oath... Gee, Iqbal, nice of you to actually get to the point after several thousand lines of commentary on the matter (who said you were being succinct... not me... although I've been nice enough not to point out your ongoing violations of U.S. copyright law). You might have made some brief mention of obstruction of justice. Of course, you're able to lecture us on Russology without mentioning the 1917 Revolution, so I've learned to expect the odd gap in analysis here and there... Clinton is just an ordinary bloke like us... Closest you've come to admitting it. :-) P. p.s. For the record, I do think the Starr Chamber has been overreaching, often incompetent, and incapable of unearthing the real truth about this administration. Re: My Captain! My Captain! Yes, WHERE US I.Q. Another options expiration jaunt to the South of France, perhaps? Also, his masterpiece on Clinton the Apollo. More like Clinton the Satyr. :-) Many people, including Iqbal, underestimated the potential impact of the Clinton scandal on the market. The Lewinsky-Starr immunity deal marked a good day to short the market. The ruble collapse and the Japan banking shudder (both of which Iqbal pooh-poohed at various times during August) cannot be ignored, but traders and investors both fear any crisis of leadership in the U.S. Iqbal is an exceedingly competent trader. His miss on the August decline (complete with heaps of derision on the "permabears") should disabuse anyone of illusions of his infallibility. P. Monday, Sep 21 1998 12:22AM ET Reply # of 28605
Re: We Interrupt this Commercial for a Question... ... actually, a question about a question that isn't in your "FAQ." How much does it cost? Actually, that's not the question. The question is, "Why isn't the price clearly noted?" Of course, the question may be moot. I would be pleased if you sent me a link to the pricing page at your website. P. p.s. See what we're reduced to when Our Captain is not among us? :-) Tuesday, Sep 22 1998 10:11AM ET Reply # of 28605
Re: The Return of the Defenders of the Faith! Dear sir, please leave this thread and cease to hassle our esteemed friend and colleague.Ike is like a brother to us all and your attacks are met with extreme anger by the entire thread. Not the entire thread! :-O P. Tuesday, Sep 22 1998 10:15AM ET Reply # of 28605
So you construct and I am nothing? You win and others lose? Is that the message that can be construed as with love but not hatred? There you go again, my friend. Hey, I think I have had my field day with you, buddie. Go misleading for all I care. Now you're beginning to get it. Tuesday, Sep 22 1998 10:43AM ET Reply # of 28605
Re: Wounded Ego I have access to SI but I just don't feel like participating. Too much of venom directed against me by people like Xia-- no sanity, Proton- nearly every day ritual of sarcasm- Not sarcasm, Mr. Latif: facts, incontrovertible facts. Facts are stubborn things, even more stubborn than your disciples. The fact about COMS, among others. The fact that you heaped an "every day ritual of sarcasm" on quality analysts like R. Acampora while the U.S. market had an historically bad month. The facts behind your flawed Russology, misreading of the psychological impact of the Clinton scandals, and the condition of the Japanese banking system. When Mr. Latif spins his grand theories, we are supposed to be in awe of his virtual mastery of politics and history. But when there is a refutation or criticism of obvious flaws and foibles, we are told to stay "on topic." Argue with the Uncle, and you're a bear. Contradict him, you're "nothing." Look at the "respect" frater noster gives those who have the temerity to speak up: I think my tragedy is that kind of people who oppose me are so shallow that in my opinion this whole exercise has been a failure..now answering these people who have nothing on line- or their only purpose is to create confusion on the thread is asking for trouble, tese guys need an answer from me that they will never get- I like to disagree with people but I also know that once you know someone well enough just don't get ever further involved. Not to mention the fact that, if you don't completely agree with Iqbal, you are a bear, the lowest form of life in his bizarre menagerie. I'll give you this, Iqbal: you have a Virtually Clintonian mastery of the use of language as propaganda. SI is populated with many intelligent, popular people who left the "Idea" thread in disgust. Of course, this information new readers of the thread "they will never get," will they? I have acknowledged your skills as a short-term trader, which is more than you can ever give people who disagree with you. It's too bad that you're not interested in a genuine brotherhood, complete with diversity of opinion and acceptance of criticism. What skills you do possess would be of some value in such an environment. I don't really care about these critcs... Sure, Uncle. Sure. I'm not looking for answers to my postings. I leave them as a response to the self-congratulation and fawning that predominates here. Consider it a small attempt to bring balance to this corner of SI. However, if you are so intolerant of diverse opinion and criticism that you would deny your pearls to us swine, then I should do no less than leave this thread. For now. Maybe one week, eh? ":-) P. Re: To Ray and Iqbal I would offer this advice to you. Please continue your postings and ignore the critics and the posts that offer no value. You created and made this thread something special and in doing so attracted other talented contributors. In looking at the thread posters over the last week most are names that I've never seen here before. Let's look this over, shall we? Please continue your postings and ignore the critics and the posts that offer no value. The intolerance of criticism on this thread is remarkable, even by the impaired standards of SI posters. I don't recall anyone telling Mr. Latif not to post. On the contrary, it was he who decided to leave in a snit because of those awful critics, leaving us hoi polloi to cry for Our Captain. It would do well for you sycophants to keep in mind that Iqbal has a strange definition of "value." In his solipsistic cyber-existence, the value of a post diminishes as it diverges from his opinion. When confronted with alternative analysis, Ike's insights give way to sneering or slashing. I was on the receiving end of one of those sharp sticks, back in Autumn, 1997 (so much for your short-tenure nonsense, Ray). I pointed out that Clinton scandals and Asian instability portended ill for the markets. Ike would hear nothing of it! How foolish of me and others to try to cloud his rose-colored glasses! Well, Ike had made it clear he was not interested in our views. He also subsequently made it clear how brilliant his insights were going into October 27, 1997. And, of course, anyone who presented an alternative view must have stayed short all through 1998 (WRONG!). As I mentioned earlier today, one thing we don't hear from pukka sahib or his adherents is the wreckage left when Iqbal goes charging after someone who has upset his cyber-nirvana. Good people -- "talented ones," Ray -- have left this thread because of the intolerance shown towards them. If Ike would leave his little corner of SI for a moment, he would see that at least one of the I.O.D. diaspora, Don Sew, has been eating his lunch on recent market calls. I'd love to answer all you snipers out there, but, then, what can I say in response to fruit-bearing trees attracting stones? Sort of a head on collision between Genesis and the Martyrdom of St. Matthew. 0:-) Pý Tuesday, Sep 22 1998 11:35PM ET Reply # of 28605
Re: A Modest Proposal Let those that demand perfection to continue to criticize and attempt to silence you, and also to attempt to impeach Clinton for his very human imperfections as this is simply human nature. Perfection claimed becomes perfection demanded, Sir Pod. Latif's relentless (and not completely accurate) self-congratulation invites a gimlet-eyed review of the facts. Here's an Idea of the Day for all you on this thread: I G N O R E M E That's right! Ignore me. Place my handle in your twit filter. Disregard my nothingness. I do not write to deprogram you. I certainly know better than to believe I can persuade Our Captain to adapt even a modicum of genuine modesty (not the grandiloquent faux variety we see). I make my postings merely as an entry into the public record of SI. I believe balance and accuracy are needed in any corner of the marketplace of ideas. And, if someone reads my posts and adapts a measure of caution while availing themselves to some competent market calls, so much the better. But remember the dark side of my proposal: ignoring me won't make me go away. I may tire of this, or I may conclude I have made my point. Rest assured, I'll not be far away. That is, after all, the beauty of the electronic Uno Mundo, right, Uncle Ike? P. Tuesday, Sep 22 1998 11:54PM ET Reply # of 28605
Re: Cry Havoc! What have you contributed to this thread other cry and blame. Where have I cried and blamed? One fact the illiterati of this thread have studiously ignored is that, unlike Latif, I am willing to point out where his work has been of fine quality. Go back and read my message to which you were responding, Karun. Carefully. I pointed out what happens when contributions are not in line with Iqbal's insights. Furthermore, criticism is contribution. I am surprised I have to explain that... No body is 100% correct in predicting/picking a stock. You wouldn't believe that by reading certain a poster's self-congratulation. Furthermore, if we agree that this is obvious, what is the harm in highlighting all aspects of performance? Pointing out others weakness in a civil manner is different than blaming... ... or contempt for those who disagree with you, or stalking off the stage because of a few boos. P. |
