RETAILER STUNS BRITISH ISPS BY OFFERING FREE NET ACCESS
A leading consumer-electronics retailer in Britain is offering free, unlimited Internet access -- taking more traditional ISPs in the United Kingdom by surprise. Freeserve, the service launched by Dixons Group, is offering standard ISP fare including high-speed access and unlimited email addresses -- without monthly charges or registration fees. A Dixons spokesman said there are a lot of households that can't justify 12 extra pounds a month for Net access. And Dixons wants them logged on so they can buy consumer electronics online. The free-access move could hurt small ISPs, but also has larger ones watching closely. If we're lucky, Dixons will start a worldwide trend.
