The magnetic head industry is going through another massive upgrade cycle as they transition to GMR heads that are much smaller and more sensitive. The fact that Veeco has partnered with RDRT on developing the highest density head only affirm that their equipment has a role to in GMR.

Also interesting is the fact that RDRT is currently saying they can beat IBM who has traditionally lead the areal density race. That is very important as the race on. There are perhaps 7 high volume head companies. They will all be buying volumes from Veeco.

I was attending Diskcon, which is the Semicon for disk drive manufacturers. There are some equipment vendors who are saying with fingers crossed, this could be their best year yet. I didn't talk to Veeco and I wouldn't expect them to tell me anyway, but there are positive things happening.

Regards,

Mark
