MUNICH, Germany, Sept 23 (Reuters) - Employees
at the German unit of Digital Equipment Corp are
planning a warning strike on Thursday to protest
against expected jobs cuts by Compaq Computer
Corp, a labour representative said on Wednesday.

The German unit plans to cut 820 of 2,400 jobs as a
result of its takeover by Compaq Computer Corp, a
spokeswoman said in answer to an enquiry by Reuters.

She added that the Digital supervisory board, which
includes labour representatives and must approve
measures such as layoffs, was set to discuss the job
action on Thursday.

Compaq has said about 17,000 jobs would be
eliminated worldwide as a result of the takeover.

A spokesman for Digital Equipment GmbH could not
be reached for comment.

In Germany's two-board system, a management board
of top executives is responsible day-to-day operations,
but must gain approval for job cuts, capital measures
and other long-term moves from a supervisory board
made of executives and labour.
