Amer Int'l to speed Kazakh gas field's production

NEW YORK, Sept 23 (Reuters) - American International Petroleum Corp. (Nasdaq:AIPN - news) said on Wednesday that it will speed production at its Greater Chikuduk prospect after a preliminary estimate showed that the Western Kazakhstan field could yield as much as 1.111 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

Huddleston & Co., the company's independent petroleum engineering consulting firm, indicates that potential recoverable gas from Chikuduk at 2,100 feet in the Greater Chikuduk prospect, covering 385,050 acres, could be as much as 1.111 trillion cubic feet of gas.

The Greater Chikuduk lies in the northeastern part of the company's 4.7 million acre concession located in Western Kazakhstan, in which the company owns a 70 percent working interest, the company said in a statement.

American International said it is ''very encouraged by these preliminary results and will accelerate its development program of the concession.''

A number of potential drilling sites have been identified and the company currently anticipates spudding the first well in late October 1998, American International said in a statement.
