In the perspective of the recent gun law here, the government has spoken for the vast majority of the people who want a safer country to live in. Restricting the movement and ownership of guns and banning clearly non-recreational weapons goes far toward meeting that goal. The crime statistics & gun usage between US and Canada shows proof of the success of policies like this.

Here in the US the areas with the most restrictive gun control laws are those with the worst problems, such as Washington, New York and Chicago with virtual bans on handguns.

Let's just drop these off topic discussions. There's so much data we could throw back and forth at each other and neither of us would change the other's mind. I'm sure we're just boring the thread.
