Interesting that you would comment on something you've had no experience with. I've worked for a number of very successful companies that have had both a direct and channel model simultaneously. The key is to keep them discrete using either product line, geography, target customers, or anything else that gives the channel control over their own destiny. It works and this is not hand-waving. Now, whether CPQ or HWP or any other existing vendor which uses a direct model will implement any strategy to support a "combination distribution model" is anyones guess. And, it's anyone's guess as to whether they'll be successful doing it. Implementation is key and you're right DELL has executed very well.

As for your last question about networked appliances reducing the market for PC's. I guess I'd answer that with another question. Do you think that web enabled TV's will cause those users of web specific, single task PC users to stop using them? That is, if a user has a PC for only web access would they migrate to a web enabled TV?
