there is no question in my mind that if csco wants to
stay ahead of its competition, csco needs ciena, it is
just a matter of price, especially given the fact that
they are working together already ...
and given the fact that ciena's price is so depressed,
csco can pick up ciena for close to nothing ...

Thanks for your post. However, a bidding war bet CSCO and LU over CIEN is not entirely impossible, and would be an even better headline.

Think about it. LU has denied sabotaging the CIEN/TLAB merger, and may be slowly preparing for a less antagonistic relationship with CIEN. Then in a move that takes CSCO by surprise, it may make a bid for CIEN at levels CSCO could not match.

I have no doubt that LU has realized that the scuttling of the CIEN/TLAB merger -- if LU had sabotaged it -- has unwittingly made CIEN much more affordable to a more formidable rival -- CSCO.

LU would be very, very stupid to allow CSCO to make out with CIEN, since LU has a lot to lose if this happens.

If it is true that DWDM is becoming extremely competitive, the last thing LU needs is an enemy like CSCO getting their hands on it.

CSCO, more than TLAB, is a threat to LU.
