Gary, the issue was never retail customers. Here channels do make sense because there is an economic value added by the reseller.

The channel paradox exists mainly for small to medium business customers who may need a few dozen machines. These are customers who typically buy through resellers, and this is the market that would be readily compromised by a shift in channel structure.

Hi Gary,

Inventory is needed in the consumer distribution model since most consumers come in and purchase their machines on the spot.

See Message 5827308 --

There may be some products for which a channel is better now, but once we have nanotechnology the producer will download blueprints to your house, which will then make the product. There does not need to be a middleman in that transaction.

Dell is positioning itself for the future. Right now the direct model works best for corporate purchases, but very soon Dell will be in every household. The deal with Excite shows that. Excite is the search engine I always choose, so it's good to see that great minds think alike. <VBG>

Speaking of search engines, I've noticed that my composition habits have changed quite a bit. If I'm not quite sure about something I'm typing about, forgetting a name or a statistic, I can use Excite to find it within a minute or so and make sure that my communication is correct.

And Excite has been helping me personally as well: I have been having some nasty abdominal pains for the past several months; Western medicine hasn't been able to fix it, so I'm trying Eastern now. But while they've been testing me, I've been reading up on it on the internet (see cpmcnet.columbia.edu for Anatomy of the Digestive System).

Technology is making doctors less relevant.

Excite might not be a bad investment these days either -- but I'm not selling any of my Dell.

Cheers,
KenB
