As far as I know, the only key executives retained at the top staff level out of Digital (excluding staff positions like legal) were Bill Strecker, who replaced Bob Stearns as CTO, and John Rando, who runs the very successful DEC service business. Strecker is very well known in the industry, was part of the original VAX team, highly regarded by anyone who has worked with him. That was a great move by CPQ IMHO. Rando's performance speaks for itself. Some of the former DEC senior line managers now work for John Rose. I think that makes sense for digital product lines like VAX and Digital Unix which have no counterpart at CPQ, and for enterprise lines like storage where DEC had better people and more experience in the area where CPQ wants to go. DEC did a lot of things right, and technically were strong. That's why CPQ bought them. Aside from that, I think that the 'classic Compaq' managers held on to the bulk of senior positions and most of the mid-level positions as well. So I think this guy is off base. He seems out to lunch on the technical stuff as well. Most of the technology in the deal with MSFT is from Tandem, not DEC, but DEC had great cluster technology (Tandem did it first by a year or two but DEC made a lot more money at it and holds a lot of key patents). He obviously does not understand much about the technical detail, many posters on this thread have a better understanding. I posted several comments on the MSFT deal when it was announced which should give you a feel for what's really up in that deal. Bottom line - I give the guy a D-, and that's only so he doesn't take my class again...
