I didn't say it involved independent evidence gathering. But quite frankly, it's the Dems in congress (Waters has been extremely vocal on this point) who have been insisting that Starr's report is "one-sided", "that the witnesses were not cross-examined," etc. I agree that the witnesses are not to be questioned by the House at the point of deciding whether the report contains sufficient evidence of impeachable offenses. My only point to you is that the House will have to thoroughly review all the materials. There's a lot of stuff to digest and I don't think the process should be hurried.

As far as releasing the documents to the public, the hearings before the House will be public, it only seems reasonable that the public should have the same information at their disposal. Please remember that there was a full House vote by a 2/3 majority (obviously included large number of Dems) that all the information should be released by Sept. 28.

Doug - from what I've ascertained you are an attorney, and from this post you've apparently checked into the procedural line that ought to be followed.

I understand that the Chief Justice acts as judge, but do you have a handle on who would be representing Clinton at trial before the Senate, should the House vote a bill of impeachment? Is it Bennett?

And is it Starr that acts as the lead prosecutor?

Just trying to envision the players.

Mr. K.

BTW, I think it was appropriate to get the muck out and end the speculation - as we discovered, the news media had been duped with some of the leaks about Clinton leaving the room, flying off the handle, etc. I think someone purposefully leaked misinformation to see how far and which directions it went.
